UwAmp - Wamp Server with Apache MySQL PHP and SQLite

For a small project I need to have a WAMP (which is a LAMP solution for my WinXP). So I took a quick look on wikipedia Wamp comparison table.

But since I reinstalled recently my pc and I used until now xammp I wanted to see if there was another easier solution and I found UwAmp

It is so small and easy to use that it is frightening.

Without installation : UwAmp is available as a Zip archive, just unpack it and you can run the server. UwAmp doesn't install files in the system to keep it clean.
Easy interface : UwAmp is provided with a management interface that lets you start or stop the server with one click.
Multi PHP Version : Change PHP version in one click to test compatibility.
CPU Monitoring : Real time Apache and MySQL process CPU monitoring.
U3 Mode : Can be run from a USB stick.

I particularly like the fact that:

you can test different versions of PHP (switchable with one click)
you have no system settings anywhere else than in the install folder. Hence easy uninstall.
the mode online/offline (with one click)
phpMyAdmin is integrated and launches with one click. I like clicks ;)
the libraries versions are more up-to-date than xammp
the preferences are logical and useful
the stat cpu/mysql is quite nice

However what makes me fall in love with it is the config panels for Apache and PHP.
Look at that: Descriptions and links for what the php/apache extensions and settings are !!!!!
No need anymore to browse the web to find what some obscure settings are and if one description is not enough you can simply click on the provided link to a more extensive doc.

What can you ask more? Free? It already is.

Why ?

As I am living on my fortune right now I must begin to seek some sort of revenue. (A few thousands $ would cover most of my living expenses... any donor?)

During this guest a human nature characteristic struck me.
Which leads me to this existential question that puzzles me deeply actually:

Why is it that I have no difficulty to find proficient, capable and engaged coders & artists only willing to code for a FREE project but none for a commercial project?

Until now the coders and artists with whom I began to work on a commercial project did all quit at the first difficulty. Whereas on a free project they are willing to pass hours to tackle difficulties!

I fail to see the logic here.

Obama versus McCain

One point I don’t understand is why all the attention is focused on one guy (Obama or McCain).

A hundred year ago it was possible for the President to understand and study all the consequences of a law or decision he must make. Not anymore. The real persons that have the power are the “shadow men” - personal advisers, personal “friends”, high officials preparing reports, etc.

And as far as I could find the differences at this level between both camps is not very great - on some points one camp is better than the other and vice-versa.

Anyway.

What disturb me is that if McCain apply his economic plan it will be catastrophic for the budget. This time I am not sure that outside countries will continue to support the US economics by buying junk paper (aka reserve notes).

On the Obama side I really don’t like that he will be elected on lies. Nearly NONE of his promises can be implemented - the US don’t have the money anymore. Obama acknowledged it himself.

The argument that it is better to elect him as he will at least TRY to do as much of his promises as he can seems hollow for me. Making promises that you know can’t fulfill define in my dictionary a lier. And I don’t want a lier for president.

The only measure that must, can and that both promised to do it is to ameliorate the education system. If they don’t the USA will not survive in its present state in the next 20 years. Irrespective of which one is elected the result will be identical: total cleavage between have and have-not.

Granted. The best reason to elect Obama is the aura he has! The biggest asset of the USA is its capability to strife on enthusiasm and optimism - European are more inclined on pessimism (and if I am not mistaken Asian on pragmatism). Obama would give a welcome boost in USA image - but not much more IMO.

Managing TODOs

My todo lists where becoming unmanageable.
So I began to search for one that was:

Simple (no need to install an apache server)
Has "popup" reminders or at least sound for important ones
Always on when I launch the computer
Importing & exporting in file (for backups :D )
and has extended functionalities in case I need them :)

As I always have a FireFox on I searched for a plugin that would do the trick and found: ReminderFox add-on (http://reminderfox.mozdev.org )

Wow... how could I have lived without this.

The list of features is impressive. It can even do:

automatic synchronisation across multiple computers,
sync with PDA & SmartPhones or even online tools!
send emails to remind us to do something.
synchronise your datas via ftp to a remote location!

Now I just need to install it before I forget to do it...

Linux: lequel choisir?

On vient de me demander: quel Linux choisir? quels faux pas à éviter?

Ma réponse devient tellement longue que je me suis dit autant la partager :)

Quel Linux choisir?

Tous d'abord Linux est en fait le nom du noyau (développé par Linus Torval) - la partie qui fait tourner tout le système. Ce qu'on installe en réalité c'est une distribution Linux. Cette dernière comprend bien-sûr le noyau Linux mais surtout tout le reste: une interface, des logicielles, des drivers, etc etc.

La difficulté c'est qu'il en a beaucoup:

Certains sont même payants.

En gros il y a 4 catégories:

1 - Les plus robustes comme RedHat, SuSE, etc mais elles sont complexes à utiliser et maintenir pour le profane elles sont plutôt pour les entreprises. A oublier pour la plupart des utilisateurs normaux.

2 - Debian qui est LA référence absolue.

En fait beaucoup de distributions sont des dérivés ou de simples variations de Debian. Le problème est que comme c'est réellement le plus avancé le code n'est pas toujours stable (si on ne prends pas la version stable). Par contre si on prend la stable elle a le risque d'avoir des mois de "retard".

Bref. Bon choix si on a besoin de logiciels à jour mais techniquement plus difficile. Ce n'est probablement pas le bon choix pour un... non-informaticien/non-geek.

3 - Les distributions "complètes". Là il en a des tonnes et souvent c'est difficile de savoir laquelle est bien. Néanmoins je peux mentionner:

3a - Mandriva qui est maintenu par des français : http://www.mandriva.com/
Mais la boite est toujours en difficulté financier et cherche à faire de l'argent. Bref c'est pour les coqs gaulois.

3b - Ubuntu c'est la plus simple à utiliser. http://www.ubuntu.com/
Et celle qui à l'air de prendre de plus en plus d'importance. C'est un bon choix. L'installation est d'après ce que j'ai entendu pas aussi trivial que Ubuntu le prétends. Comme TOUT les distributions Linux si un problème apparait à l'installation cela devient très vite techniquement difficile.

Un autre avantage c'est un dérivé de Debian donc on peux installer "facilement" une version à jour de n'importe quel logiciel (ou même le noyau). Toutes les distributions peuvent installer de nouveaux logiciels mais le faire depuis Debian est le plus optimal à mon avis.

Ubuntu est un bon choix.

4 - Les "mini" Linux

Ils sont en fait des distributions dont on a enlevé le superflu. Pour ne laisser que les logiciels les plus utiles. P.ex dans les distributions "complétées" tu peux avoir une centaine d'éditeur de textes, des dizaines de messagerie, etc. Ces "mini" Linux font le travail de ne laisser que quelques versions vraiment à jour et utilisables. C'est une solution.

D'autant plus qu'elle sont souvent simple et prennent peu de place. Certains peuvent même être tellement réduit que tu peux l'installer sur une clef USB et pour l'utiliser tu mets simplement la clef et... voilà pas besoin d'autres installation! Évidemment c'est plus lent de travailler depuis la clef mais tu peux changer d'ordinateur sans problème.

Le plus courant est d'utiliser un CD qu'on appelle "CD Live" qu'on a simplement à mettre dans le lecteur et sans installation on tourne sous Linux !

Bref. Pas besoin d'installation si on le souhaite.

Cela dit il faut quand même créer une partition sur un disque dur pour pouvoir stocker son travail soit utiliser un DVD/CD reinscriptible.

Sinon dans ces mini Linux mon choix se porte sur:

4a - Knoppix ou Gnoppix les deux ont la particularité d'être petit.

La différence principale étant l'interface de travail (l'équivalent de Windows):

Knoppix utilise KDE http://www.kde.org/
Gnoppix utilise Gnome http://www.gnome.org/

C'est vraiment personnel lequel est le meilleure... ils ont les deux le désavantage d'être gros (avec un petit ordinateur d'il y a 10 ans c'est un problème).
Je préfère les petites interfaces comme Fluxbox, twm, IceW ou mon préféré Xfce. Elles ne comportent pas toutes les fonctionnalités des deux grosses dont je n'ai pas besoin .

Notez que Ubuntu offre une version pour Gnome (Ubuntu), KDE (Kubuntu) ou Xfce (Xubuntu).

En cherchant les liens je suis tombé sur:

4b - Musix C'est une distribution spécialisée pour les ....musiciens et graphistes 3d!

On dirait qu'il rassemble tout ce qui faut pour la musique et ordonne le tout de façon logique (pour des musiciens). Le seule problème est la documentation qui est surtout en espagnol.. mais il y une communauté anglaise.

Voilà. A vous de choisir.

En fait il y deux choix: 1,2 ou 3 = installation ou 4 = utiliser un "cd live" pour se faire d'abord une idée de Linux.

A noter deux projets qui tente de faire ressembler l'interface aussi proche que possible de Windows XP pour permettre aux futur-ex-Windows de passer à Linux:

Quels faux pas à éviter?

Coté pratique maintenant. Les tout premiers pas.

Il y a deux cas:

1 - Installer Linux sur une nouvelle machine.

C'est le plus simple il suffit de lancer l'installation et de suivre les étapes.
Ce n'est pas tellement un problème... quand tout vas bien. Si un problème arrive pendant l'installation c'est souvent insurmontable pour un néophyte. Je défie un néophyte de régler un problème avec X windows quand le clavier est mystérieusement transformé en un clavier US.

Mais il y une étape à ne pas manquer: c'est le choix du formatage. Pour la plupart je recommande d'utiliser un formatage qui soit compatible avec le système Windows. Cela permet d'accéder via un réseau local au répertoire depuis une machine Windows.

2 - Installer Linux et Windows sur la même machine.

Là c'est plus délicat. Je n'ai qu'un conseille: lire la documentation!
Heureusement des bénévoles ont traduit en français les deux documents qu'il faut lire à mon avis.

Le site (mal organisé) http://traduc.org/ contient une mine de documentation sur tous les sujets (MIDI, USB, etc etc).

An Open Source Legal Breakthrough

Good day for the OpenSource movement : 'An appeals court has erased most of the doubt around Open Source licensing, permanently, in a decision that was extremely favorable toward projects like GNU, Creative Commons, Wikipedia, and Linux.'

This is only in the US but as they are the most litigious for frivolous reason this should protect most of the open source community :D

What is frightening is that Katzer patented and started sending invoices to Jacobsen for work that Jacobsen did! And it took a whole court procedure to defend Jacobsen...

It should be obvious in this case that Katzer should be condemned for extortion!

However the most pertinent comment in my opinion is the following:

"This was an appeals court decision. The appeals court doesn't decide all those things. The legal issue was whether the license was enforceable under copyright law, or whether it was a "mere covenant," meaning that Jacobsen would get nothing because he was not making money off the software. The lower court had ruled that it was a mere covenant. On appeal, the Federal Circuit vacated that ruling, which means it now goes back to the trial court to apply the "correct" law as announced by the Fed. Cir.

Two takeaway lessons, one for Big Business, and one for developers. For Big Business, you can't infringe on the copyrights of open source developers with impunity. For developers, even if you are doing open source software, REGISTER YOUR COPYRIGHT. If you register your copyright up front, you can get statutory damages and attorney fees if some idiot from Big Business decides to try this kind of stunt. Those damages are almost always more than the "actual" damages you'll get for software that you give away for free (as in beer). If you wait until after somebody infringes before you file your copyright, it's too late. And registering is cheap and easy [copyright.gov]. In many cases, you don't even need to get an attorney involved (although if you need a patent or trademark or help with a copyright, I know this really great IP attorney who also posts on Slashdot and is clued in on open source. Fortunately for OGE we have a dual license and we intent to get payments for the commercial license :)

I heard about it via an article in "The Economist" that Skype is already so encrypted that spy agencies have difficulties with it (only the NSA has the means to crack it). And that Zfone would be even more difficult to crack.

Why reinvent the wheel again and again?

Reading this post "Get that job at Google" on Stevey blog's made me wonder why we always reinvent the wheel in the software industry.

At one point he says the interviewers usually ask to implement a well known basic algorithm (tree, sorting, ...). Why?

Do they expect that rooting learning existing algorithms makes a good programmer?

Said differently: Do you really ask a Chief how to build pans, knifes or an oven? Wouldn't it be better to test if he is able to select appropriate ingredients or use bad ingredients to make tasty dishes?

As most of us I studied how sorting, hashtable, trees and other statistics methods where implemented. And I quickly realised that only very few mathematical genius would be able to ameliorate them hence I forgot how to code them as soon as possible to leave place for useful stuff.

Such as which of the available implementations (Boost::graph, Poco, std,...) is the best in a cross-platform implementation, which one is thread-safe, which one is fastest, etc.

Anyway very informative post.
I wonder how much time he uses to write those rants :)

PS: If I made interviews one of my question would be to use so-called "advanced" statistical methods to prove a relationship among data then change the chosen method parameters to disprove it!

Cpu usage going to 100% when pc idle

Since months each time I let my pc idle it would go in idle mode. Nothing special here.

However some process was doing something in the background when my pc should have been idle. This didn't bothered me because each time I used my pc again this process would stop. Hence I thought it was a "normal" Windows process doing some small maintenance.

Recently I began to have doubts.

To pinpoint the problem I used the excellent free must-have tool ProcessExplorer. (At least grab it before Macro$ begins to charge for it ;)

After lauching ProcessExplorer I waited until my pc got idle and this mysterious process began (= gone taking a cup of coffee). When I cam back it was running so I looked at ProcessExplorer and saw that it was a SVCHOST.exe running at 80-100% cpu!! Ouch!

That's much badder than I thought but strangely the pc didn't seem to heat so much - hence the fan didn't turn like mad and the reason it didn't realise the problem sooner.

ProcessExplorer told me numerous services are associated with this SVCHOST and my suspicion quickly turned to the "System Restore Service".

Some browsing helped me found this trick which indicate that some infinite loop was happening:

Open a dos shell window. By clicking “Start/Run”, type in “cmd.exe” and hit enter.
Stop the Windows Management service: "net stop winmgmt"
Delete the Repository folder: "rd /s /q c:\windows\system32\wbem\Repository\"
Restart the Windows Management service: "net start winmgmt"
Recompile all the "Managed Object Format" files (*.mof,*.mfl):
a - "cd /d c:\windows\system32\wbem\"
b - "for %i in (*.mof,*.mfl) do Mofcomp.exe %i"
Verify the folder "c:\windows\system32\wbem\Repository\" has been recreated. If not, restore your system and try again or look for another solution. :-)

This trick worked for me.
I should have done this a long time ago.

I didn't need to try this other trick: "Problem with High CPU Usage with SVCHost.EXE : cpu, usage, high".

If none work for you you will probably need to use ProcessExplorer and stop one-by-one the programs linked to the SVCHOST.exe to find the culprit and decide either to leave it stopped or correct it by reinstalling it.

Also don't forget to update you anti-virus, spyware etc as it could be a corrupt service.

RepRap is short for Replicating Rapid-prototyper. It is the practical self-copying 3D printer shown on the right - a self-replicating machine.

I hope I find time to build it with my children :D

My first mesh... and a comment from my son

Half a day to create my first mesh it should be a wagon... and I have no idea if this is a good performance or not :D

So that I can remember how I did it, here is a short description of the steps needed to create this image with Ogre, Blender and visualise the result in OGEd:

Launch Blender and try to use it.
Search online Blender tutorial to understand the most basic commands: Blender User Interface Tutorial, Modelling A Cube, Selecting Meshes and Using Textures.
Struggling like hell to select faces, rescaling, subdividing to create more faces, destroy some faces to create doors and windows, ...
Repeating step 3 several times.
Reread 'Using Textures' to understand how to apply textures.
Save and repeat steps 3-5 until you get this wagon. Forget about making a complex multiple windows wagons.
Using the steps on "Blender to Ogre" to determine how to export the mesh:

Copy the Pyhton script from ogrenew/tools/BlenderExport to the blender folder
Read the documentation in BlenderExport/ogrehelp/ogremeshesexporter.html
Realise that Blender must have a version newer than 2.44 (mine is 2.43)
Download Blender, reinstall it, reload the mesh.
Realise that I didn't compile OgreXmlConverter (/ogrenew/tools/XMLConverter)
Install OgreXmlConverter and set up the mesh exporter correctly.
I said correctly.
.... no mesh appear in the exporter.... lose time to understand that you need to select the object and click Update if you want the mesh to be exported.

(Repeat from step 5 because there was no textures on some faces...)
At last the export works and here are:

MyMesh.mesh.xml and
MyMesh.material

Now you must convert it to a .mesh so that Ogre can understand it. So you search the doc to find that you need XMLConverter again.
In a console you type "OgreXmlConverter MyMesh.mesh.xml" and you get MyMesh.xml
You load the mesh, material and texture in a mesh viewer (OGEd for example).
.... and you see that the mesh is turned 90 degree on its x axis.... Bags!
You find that the ogre addons MeshMagick can rotate a mesh.
You try to compile it and stumbles on a compile error...

You check the code and see that this can't compile.
So you make a quick fix (who needs to convert mesh skeleton anyway... humpf... I will need to compile this correctly at one time).
You type a bug report about this skeleton bug.

You rotate it... in the wrong direction... redo it.
Reload all in OGEd and... yes it shows correctly.

That was easy - I will watch a movie now.

Comment from my son (3.5 years old) "Dady doesn't even know how to make wheels!". I will disinherit him...

OGEd - Open Game Editor (aka Ogre/OGE Editor) open sourced!

OGEd is now open-source :)

OGEd stands for Open Game Editor but at this stage it is more an Ogre Resource Editor and will evolve into an OGE Editor before becoming a true versatile Open Game Editor :D

You can get it on the OGE sourceforge as code or binary.

Of course there are still lots to do and any help would be great.

Originally I took inspiration from the Ogre project name "Material Editor" and 5 files that allowed Ogre script edition were really interesting.
So I proposed to the Ogre owner -Sinbad- that we exchange some code so that both could benefit - I thought it was a win-win proposal. I was wrong.

His answer disappointed me. As I want to be able to distribute OGEd under our OGE unlimited license -which I can't if I must keep Ogre license and copyright- I was obliged to remove ANY code that could be interpreted as being originally from the Material Editor :(

This attitude is bit to near to the "SCO versus Linux" for my taste. This is not how I idealise the open source movement. For me if someone is willing to exchange worthwhile code I am more than happy to give mine. Saving time is the most important thing in live! I am not immortal! In my opinion copyrights and licenses are primarily a way to protect my work from people patenting it and then trying to stop me using my code or even making me pay for the work I did! I use them to protect me against crooks and felons.

This lead me to read some legal texts about using existing code without infringing copyright & license. And I found this legal review from the ReactOS project: http://www.reactos.org/en/dev_legalreview.html (ReactOS is a nice project btw I hope it will reach the stage where VC runs on it).

This point is fairly obvious but IMO hard to achieve as C++ programmers are increasingly using the same coding style:

Developers are encouraged to NOT attempt to copy the coding style of non-free code. While coding style may not covered by copyright, a similar or identical coding style to a piece of non-free code casts suspicion on the new code.

This experience made me realise that the "Tainted Developers" theory is nearly unavoidable and I was not able to explain my position to Sinbad. So to avoid again a "SCO versus linux" issue I will avoid reading ANY copyrighted code from now on.

"Tainted Developers". There is a legal theory that is occasionally cited in the context of producing a work-alike implementation of a published copyrighted work. There is concern that, if the creators of the new work have seen the original work, they will be unable to create a similar work without infringing the copyright of the original. It is the position of the Project that this theory is invalid for a number of reasons. As a general rule, there is no reason that a developer who has seen non-free code cannot write logically similar code for ReactOS.

What a lose of time and effort - I hate to reinvent the wheel.

Using the microsofts CRT debug heap is an easy way of doing it.

To get a listing of all memory leaks, you simply need to include crtdbg.h, set the debug flag, using the function _CrtSetDbgFlag and run your code in debug mode. The leaks will appear in the output tab.

To get started with it here is the minimal code to implement it:

POCO and open-source

Recently I stumbled on POCO: A C++ Portable Components, or a collection of open source C++ class libraries. One word: wow. This library seems very well thought and having tried several libraries this one is the most promising.

Actually I am using mostly boost but I begin to be worried by the inconsistence between each sub libraries considering the api, the documentation and some over bloated code.
My principal need was a cross-platform threading libraries but boost::thread is lacking in some areas (no read-write mutex, difficulty to set thread specific code, ...). All those are present in POCO.

I will definitively switch to it if my tests are satisfactory and forget about boost. In fact I am even hoping that boost will not be used at all in the C++0x revision...

Marthen Mickos the MySQL CEO posted very interesting thoughts about how to succeed with an open-source project.
They needed 12 years... I will try to explain this to my wife:
"Darling! Let me work on my pet project... I will be rich in 12 years."
Somehow I have the feeling it will be difficult to convince her :)
MySQL needed 6 years to have a stable code so OGE has still 5 years to become stable.
Good - I am not as off track as I feared :D

OGEd - Ogre/OGE editor

A week ago I began work on an oge/ogre editor.

As oge uses ogre resources such as .material, .mesh, etc this editor can also be used as a resources editor for Ogre3D.

Even after one week when the code is fairly minimal I already understand better the interdependences of the ogre resources and this will oblige me to make a small refactoring.

Discovering as you code new features or libraries complexities is one of the main reason that "linear project management" (aka Waterfall model : requirements -> analysis-> design -> coding -> testing -> installation) is possible only if you know extensively your environment. When dealing with a medium sized project or libraries you don't know in depth a "recursive project management" (aka Spiral model) is much preferable.

One book I must read is the second edition of Code Complete... one more TODO :)

Nara Candle Festival

Le 20 c'est tenu le Nara Candle Festival. C'est un festival annuel sur le jumelage entre Canberra et Nara - l'ancienne capitale du Japon.

Le festival en lui-même se passe à la tombé de la nuit et rassemble - comme c'est surprenant - tous les japonais du coin, les traiteurs - miam - et autres groupes culturels japonais. Le spectacle de Kodo était fait par des blancs mais très bon (Kotori Trio). Il faudra que je trouve plus d'infos sur eux. Oliver a adoré la performance.

La fête était très sympa.

Ce qui me surprendra toujours c'est à quel point les australiens et japonais sont propres: le site de la fête n'est pas rempli de détritus comme en Europe.

Après le combat de sabre (en bois) les combattants ont donner les sabres au public! J'aurais adoré en avoir un... même si Adi l'aurait utilisé pour démolir la maison.

Dès qu'on trouve le temps on ira visiter le japon à nouveau et comme Nara se trouve près d'Osaka cette ville sera certainement du parcours.

OGE shooting!

Our project OGE passed a critical milestone I can now create game, level and scene objects. Even if the code still needs some polishing before committing to cvs I were able to create a very basic fps. You can move, jump and shoot - what do you need more in a fps ? ;)

L'autre jour je suis tombé sur le site de khavi.

Totalement gratuit les musiques qu'on peut télécharger sont excellentes... Si on aime la musique éléctronique d'ambiance bien-sûr.

Pour les programmeurs je ne peux que conseiller cette musique elle permet une bonne concentration sans fatigue auditive.

... qu'Adrian a réussi à passer sans blessures dignes de ce nom.
(ou plutôt qu'on a été assez rapide pour l'empêcher de se tuer).

Mais aujourd'hui il expérimente: brulure sur une poêle et coupure avec une collection de petits débris, terre, etc.

Il pleure comme une madeleine s'il ne reçoit pas un chocolat mais il est resté stoïque pendant que je lui nettoyais la coupure avec une loupe et une pince Brussel (ou à écharde).

Brave garçon il a mérité son chocolat :)

Si vous voulez m'envoyer quelque chose n'oublier pas les facteurs australiens regardent l'adresse PAS LE NOM!

Si le numéro est faux p.ex 7 au lieu de 6, les facteurs vont mettre le courrier au 7
et cela même s'ils ont déjà amenés au 6 des milliers de lettre adressées à mon nom....
Je n'arrête pas de recevoir des lettres du voisin où seul le chiffre est faux!

Idem pour l'ancien locataire... je reçois son courrier bancaire (même si on a déjà dit qu'il n'habite plus ici).

D'ailleurs cela me fait penser que je dois acheter une nouvelle boîte au lettre car la nôtre est trop petit. Il va simplement plier jusqu'à ce que ça rentre ... tant pis s'il y a un CD dedans p.ex.

Facture d'éléctricité... et vin italien

Depuis plusieurs semaines une boîte de distribution d'électricité n'arrête pas de nous contacter par lettre et téléphone pour nous dire de payer notre facture sinon ils nous coupent le courant !

Depuis plusieurs semaines nous leur répondons que "Nous n'avons pas de facture car... nous ne sommes pas client chez vous!".

Enfin ils ont admis aujourd'hui que : "Oh... c'est vrai on ne vous a jamais envoyé de facture!".
Sans commentaire...

Bizarrement les vins australiens en Suisse et en Australie sont quasiment le même prix.
Par contre on trouve des vins italiens pas mal du tout.
P.ex le 2005 Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Marchesini à... 3 $ (~3 CHF) !

Peut-être qu'il y a du méthanol dedans mais il est bon.
Idem pour des pâtes faites en Italie.

OpenAl & ogg/ vorbis libraries

In our engine we were using Alut to be able to load and play .wav audio files.
However there was two points we didn't like:
- Alut is a messy C code without namespace and lots of defines that have very generic names. Hence we tread interactions between the alut code and ours (or the programmer using oge).
- We use alut only for Wav files which is a proprietary codec. And as we want to use open license audio codec (such as ogg) we need to recreate some parts of alut anyway.

Hence I decided to rewrite the oge::AudioManager to remove any alut dependencies and add libogg and libvorbis support. And after some hours of work here it is ogg support (streamed or in-memory). As wav files are very common I must also rewrite the alutLoadWAV method.

It is a preliminary version and will need some tweaking - especially the audio update loop must be robust and without any cpu expensive work or some clicks can occur. Streaming without a separate thread would be impossible.

The code will be committed to the SourceForge cvs in a few days - I am waiting a commit from my partner.

Father's Day

C'était la journée des pères ici... donc on est allé à une manifestation comme tous bon australien (à part que nous on y est allé à pied et eux en voiture). Ce qui m'amuse c'est que cela veut dire aller avec les enfants faire des occupations qui les divertissent eux. A part un vendeur de BMW d'occaz je n'ai rien vu pour les pères.

Et cela au lieu de faire ce que j'avais envie càd me poser sur un hamac avec deux superbes... avec ma superbe femme me servant un cocktail et m'apportant un bon livre du genre Phantom puis de voir un dvd le soir p.ex. Ghost in the Shell SAC et non Pingu.

Un mec avait l'air sympa il était couché par terre en train de lire pendant que sa femme se promenait avec ses deux gosses.

Oui, je sais je suis un mauvais père mais bon... "it's Father Day" :D

Une anecdote: En allant à la manif il y avait une porte ouverte pour une maison à vendre. On s'est dit que l'extérieur avait l'air pas mal alors on est entré.... humpff... goût parfait des propriétaires, fauteuils confortables, tableaux abstrait mais captivant, cuisine super moderne, master bedroom et walk-in d'enfer, cours intérieur donnant sur une piscine ni trop grande, ni trop courte pour faire des longueurs, bar extérieur avec écran plasma pivotant descendant du toit pour voir un film depuis la piscine, etc etc etc.

Prix estimé 2 millions $... bon merci pour la visite je vais retourner dans ma roulotte.

Physics libraries

In our project (OGE) we are in need of a physics library to add features such as collision, gravity, etc. We studied various available open-source libraries as our engine aims to be also open-source.

Until now our preference went to OPAL which gave a nice abstraction above ODE. It added nice features such as spaces. However the developers found that it at matured enough and don't want to add more features in it - they only do bug fixes now. To demonstrate the lack of interest even their wiki was down more than 2 months without any developers reacting (they didn't even knew about it before I send them an email).
So we began to search for another one because there are features we would like to add.

And we found a gem : Impulse (IBDS) it is very new, developed by a single person but very very promising. He is actively involved and adds new features nearly on a daily rate.
We discussed with him and seems interested in adding the features we seek: cloth, cloth+ collision, hair, breakable objects, ... Even liquid in the future.
It is cross-platform I had no problem in compiling it with mingw.

Wow... this is a lib I will follow.

Warehouse : l'alibaba pour parents fauchés...

... et pour ceux qui viennent de débarquer en Australie.

On a enfin trouvé un magasin où la marchandise est d'une "certaine" qualité et à des prix raisonnable: le Warehouse. Si vous ne faites pas gaffe Canberra est plus cher que la Suisse ou alors cela ne tient pas 2 jours (p.ex. les éponges de cuisine achetés dans les super marchés sont mortes après une semaine) .
Après un mois en Australie on peut vraiment acheter les objets qui nous manquent : balai, brosse, seau, grille-pain (le nôtre à grillé juste avant le départ), etc. Tout ce qu'il faut pour emménager sans avoir besoin d'emprunter sans arrêt aux voisins ou de dépenser une fortune.

Bref à partir de maintenant j'ai un magasin de référence pour savoir si je suis en train de me faire plumer ou non. Je ne sais pas encore si je vais craquer pour l'hélicoptère télécommandé à 25$.

Porte ouverte au dép de géoscience

On vient de visiter le Département de géoscience à Canberra (google map) qui tenait une journée porte ouverte.
Bien sûr on l'a choisi car il y avait aussi quelques activités pour les enfants : Terre en 3d, concours de reconnaissance de cailloux, pardon, minéraux, collier en pierre, etc.

Ce qui m'amuse c'est le gens qui passaient tout leur temps sur le jeu de recherche d'or et saphir. Avec un tamis on essaie de trouver des pépites ou saphirs d'une eau boueuse. Je parie que la plus part ne savait même pas faire la différence entre un caillou et un saphir non taillé et, surtout, poli!

En tout cas le bâtiment est impressionnant pour ses 10 ans.
Ce département à 2 à 3 fois plus de place qu'UniMail !

Une chercheuse (d'origine française) me disait que le gouvernement vient d'allouer beaucoup de fonds supplémentaires et qu'ils engagent à tour de bras.

On voit que pour l'Australie les ressources minières ont une importance stratégique.
Et vu les recherches qu'ils font sur le pétrole on devrait pouvoir tenir encore un peu.

University Open Day

Aujourd'hui se tenait les portes ouvertes de l'université de Canberra.
On a surtout visité le département de musique car Mirjam veut peut-être participé.

Bon... je ne suis pas musicien mais je n'ai pas été follement impressionné par la qualité des présentations. Et les cours me semblent affreusement cher pour le peu d'heures de cours.

En tous cas les enfants aiment les chants acapella et la samba - surtout Adrian car il y a des tambours sur lesquels les musiciens peuvent faire du "boum boum boum".
Ils ont aussi aimé la musique Javanaise (Gamelan) mais Adrian était tout déçu car on est arrivé pendant le dernier morceau.

Par contre la musique de chambre il supporte 10 sec.

Natel contre facture de gaz

Pour ouvrir un compte bancaire on doit d'authentifier. Jusque là rien d'exceptionnel.
Par contre on doit avoir un "100% authentification" ce qui veut dire que pour être authentifié il faut plusieurs documents qui nous authentifient. Dans mon cas pour ouvrir un compte bancaire j'ai dû montrer mon passeport (+40%) , ma carte medicare (+40%) (sécurité sociale si on veut) et mon permis de conduire Suisse (+20 pour atteindre les 100%).

Cela dit j'aurais pu utiliser d'autres documents : facture d'électricité, de gaz, loyer, autres comptes bancaires (dans une autre banque bien-sûr), carte de crédit, etc mais à ce moment il y a moins de points donc il faut plus de documents.

Ce qui m'amuse c'est que pour vider un compte il suffit de connaître le numéro de compte (quasi-totalité des australiens l'utilisent comme identifiant internet) et un password.
Et voilà vous pouvez vider leur compte. Les cartes-tokens, cartes à puces, listes à biffer, etc sont inexistants ici. Je me demande s'il y a pas un business à faire ici.

Juste après on a voulu prendre un natel (mobile phone). Rebelote.
Mais chez eux le permis de conduire suisse ne donne pas assez de points et on avait pas d'autres documents bref je n'ai pas pu avoir de natel... cool.

Bien sûr j'aurais pu donner mon numéro bancaire mais franchement je n'ai aucune envie de donner à une boîte de communication des infos sur mes comptes bancaires.

On va donc devoir y retourner avec une facture de gaz pour avoir un natel.
Quel pays bizarre.

Travail à domicile

Et voilà.
Déjà un mois que nous sommes en Australie et je constate que de travailler à domicile n'est pas évident.
Je savais intellectuellement que d'être à la maison implique une discipline de fer pour ne pas être tenté de faire autre chose : chercher un café, lire un journal, jouer avec les enfants, écrire sur mon blog, ... Mais le savoir intellectuellement est différent de la pratique, il faut que je me fouette un peu...

Coutumes bizarres

Il me faudra un certain temps pour m'habituer aux procédures australiennes :

Les rendez-vous professionnelles peuvent être annulées sans préavis, ni avertissement.
Un rendez-vous pour une date et heure peut-être décalé sans préavis de plusieurs heures voire de plusieurs jours.
"Ils" vous avertissent en route qu'ils arrivent "We are on our way we are here in 5 min"!
Les jardiniers arrivent dans votre jardin sans avertissement.
Au cours des locations les gros dégâts immobiliers ne sont pas notés par contre des trous de punaises/petits clous le sont.
La régie contrôle l'état de la chose louée régulièrement... et il faut tous nettoyer !!!! Et on a même pas tous les cartons déballés. Encore plus agréable quand ils annoncent "Au fait on vient la semaine prochaine et non le mois prochain comme annoncé!". A nous de nous débrouiller de changer notre planning.

Bref quand vous commandez quelque chose vous n'avez aucune idée quand ils vont venir.

D'autres petites choses me font plus penser à un pays du tiers-monde :

"Nous avons bien reçu votre requête mais nos serveurs sont en panne nous vous contacterons quand nous pourrons traiter votre demande."
Les factures sont envoyées à la mauvaises adresse et si on ne le remarque pas ils coupent simplement le service (électricité, téléphone, ...). Les recommandés n'existent pas ?

Bref, bizarre bizarre.

Pre-school

Aujourd'hui on a inscrit Adrian dans la seule pre-school bilingue (Français - Anglais). Et on a remarqué que nous sommes arrivé un mois trop tard en Australie, les délais d'inscriptions sont déjà passé pour l'année prochaine : le début de l'année scolaire étant en Janvier !

Il faut que quelqu'un se désinscrive pour qu'Adrian puisse avoir une place. Même pour les preschools anglaises c'est trop tard... argh.

Mais si on était venu un mois plus tôt on aurait dû remplir les impôts australien (la fin de l'année fiscale étant le 30 juin).

OGE Component / Object framework

Today is a day to be marked with a white stone :)

My implementation of the Component/Object design I envisioned worked as planned.

In particular I was able to add Serialisation to it without too much difficulties. Especially when you consider the flexibility given to you by the component/object structure in creating custom objects.

I need to clean it a bit, write some docs and I can commit it on the OGE sourceforge cvs.

Import/export symbols mystery

Wow... we added recently the zlib and zziplib libraries to OGE.

The mingw (3.4.5) debug version of oge builds and runs perfectly.
The difficulty came during link time of the release version of OGE:

with zlib.a half the symbols and methods are not exported !
with zlib_d.a it links perfectly.

At least I could pinpoint the problem... I must now find why.
I suppose it is caused by preprocessor symbols but a quick look didn't show me something obvious.

At least I can go back on working on the Component/Object system code which has priority.

Les impressions de nos premiers jours.

La première semaine est à oublier : rhume de toute la famille, décalage horaire des enfants, difficulté à régler le chauffage, pas assez de convertisseurs de prise électrique pour la plus part des appareils ... bref très peu dormi. Crevé au point où on se demande ce qu'on fait dans cette galère.

Il n'y a que deux semaines que nous sommez arrivé et on a pas pu beaucoup visiter la région.
Cela dit on dirait que Canberra est une sorte d'île de verdure dans l'outback. La forêt native est composée d'eucalyptus et de quelques herbes. Comme les feuilles de la plupart des eucalyptus est toxique et favorise le feu, quasi-rien ne pousse à part eux.

Heureusement les habitants de Canberra favorisent les arbres "européens" : chêne, peuplier, etc même des soles pleureurs et à ces endroits il y a de l'herbe comme en Suisse :) Même si c'est l'hiver et que les arbres n'ont pas de feuilles c'est plus vert que prévu.

A part ça on a surtout visité les banques, administrations, grands-magasins, etc. bref tout ce qu'il faut pour habiter :)

Ah.. au fait... une voiture est OBLIGATOIRE si vous avez une poussette: les bus sont trop petits pour qu'elles entrent !
Et visiblement les habitants ne marchent pas : on a marché ~5 km jusqu'au centre ville et on nous a regardé avec de gros yeux...
Pourtant les chemins si prêtent parfaitement.
